Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effect of pacifier on pain responses and behavior patterns
of premature infants during painful stimulation. The research design was a one group pretest-posttest design.

Method: The subjects of this study were 15 premature infants hospitalized in neonatal intensive care unit of C university hospital located in Seoul. Collected data were analyzed with SPSS program (Ver. 15.0).

Result: In conclusion, the score of pain behavioral responses and behavior patterns after applying pacifier was
lower than before. And there was a significant difference statistically in pain physiologic responses including heatrate,
respiratory rate, and SaO2. Accordingly, the pacifier showed pain relief effect for premature infants. We propose to conduct additional research on targeting premature infants on a large scale and categorized by gestational age. It is also necessary to have further studies to confirm pain relief effect of pacifier for other pain management.
